Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto has reminded women, family and community development minister Rina Harun that she has executive powers to addres the issue of child protection.

PETALING JAYA: An opposition MP has called on women, family and community development minister Rina Harun to act on the insufficient number of child protection officers instead of just “lamenting” about the problem.

DAP’s Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto said Rina should not just be releasing statements on the issue but should instead be “getting the job done” as a minister with executive powers.

“As a minister in the Cabinet, Rina need not lament on social media for brownie points on what she ought to do instead of actually rolling up her sleeves and doing it,” Kasthuri said in a statement.

“Like all Malaysians, I don’t wish to read statements by the ministers and deputy ministers on what should be done. Instead, I want to see statements of them actually doing it and getting it done.”

Yesterday, Rina said the number of child protection officers under the social welfare department was grossly inadequate and needed to be increased immediately.

She said the current ratio of one officer to handle 50 to 100 cases of child abuse and neglect was insufficient, Bernama reported.

Kasthuri said the insufficient number of child protection officers was not a new issue as it had been identified by the Pakatan Harapan administration and a solution was in the pipeline.

“Unfortunately, the government changed in 2020 and this plan was not followed through and remained buried for two years, until yesterday, when Rina made the statement after the two cruel cases of child abuse.”

Kasthuri said Rina had stated the appointment of 224 child protection officers had been approved by the government in January last year as part of the first phase of recruiting 1,122 officers.

“The ministry had 264 officers at that time. What did you (Rina) do in the 20 months after the announcement?” she asked.

She also called on the government to table a report to be submitted at the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting on Malaysia’s shortcomings, achievements and plans for improving child welfare in the country.
