Building a wall is not an easy job and cannot be rushed, so firstly you need to accept the fact that it will take you the best part of a day to do depending on the size and height, so make sure you can allow the amount of time needed.
If you intend to build a load bearing wall as part of your property then you will need to call in a structural engineer for advice, but for now let’s assume that you are just building a simple wall in your garden or patio area.
So let us take a look at the materials that you are going to need to build your wall:
- Lime for your mortar
- Bricks (an obvious one)
- A standard sized bucket to hold your water for mixing mortar
- A brick layers trowel
So now we need to look at the building of the wall.
Dig a shallow trench, fill this with mortar and then lay a line of concrete slabs along the full width of the wall area. Use a spirit level to check that they are level. This is a very important stage of building your wall because the quality of your final wall will depend on having a sound base.
Set up a string line along the path of the wall so that you can follow it making it easier to keep your wall straight. Below this line apply a layer of mortar using a 1 to 5 mix. That’s 1 of cement and 5 of sand.
Measure the gaps carefully on this first line of bricks making sure they are 10mm wide. Begin laying your bricks applying a good amount of the mix to one end of the bricks as you go along. Don’t be too concerned with pointing at this stage but instead concentrate on keeping a good line as well as making sure the blocks are vertical. Use a spirit level regularly to help you because once you start going out of line it is difficult to undo this further down the line.
Once you have plenty of bricks laid then you can go back over your work and tidy up the pointing.
This technique should only be used to build a wall up to around 4 feet high. Anything taller than this should be laid on much deeper and stronger footing and should also be make a double thickness wall.
