Before cleaning, make sure the pot or pan is wet. To start the process, apply Bar Keepers Friend onto the cookware surface then lightly rub in circulation with a wet soft cloth where the stains present. If using powder Bar Keepers Friend, it’s always a good idea to mix the powder with water to turn it into a paste form before rubbing in order to remove stubborn stains. If the stains are difficult to remove, it is suggested to leave Bar Keepers Friend paste on the wet cookware surface for a while before rubbing. This would help to make the stains gone off easily. When the stains have been removed completely, rinse the cookware through warm water and wash it with soap to clean off all chemical residues. Finally, rinse the cookware thoroughly with hot water and use dry clean towel to wipe it completely.
Using white vinegar is another method to restore the discolored stainless cookware. First, fill the discolored stainless steel cookware with one cup of vinegar and add water as needed to cover the stains. Next, boil the vinegar water mixture for about five minutes then allow it to cool down completely. After that, wash the cookware with soap and hot water using a soft dish wash cloth or a non-abrasive pad. When done cleaning, rinse the stainless steel cookware thoroughly with hot water and dry it completely with a clean towel. Be aware that when boiling vinegar, it would produce a fermented smell. If you cannot tolerate the smell, instead of boiling the vinegar, allow the vinegar water mixture sit in the cookware for a while longer before washing it with soap to rub the stains out and complete the process as suggested.
Best of all, in order to avoid discoloration, remember not to put stainless steel pots and pans over high heat. It is recommended once the pots and pans are hot after preheating, maintain medium or medium-low heat for cooking. Clean pots and pans after each use and wipe it with dry clean towels would certainly help the cookware remain spotless.
