PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan has rejected an electoral pact with Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Gerakan Tanah Air organisation for the coming general election.
PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said on Twitter: “We share the same goal of defeating BN and PN. But Pakatan Harapan will face GE15 this time as a coalition without Mahathir.”
He added: “We pray for Mahathir to be given good health and if Mahathir chooses to contest we wish him good luck.”
Mahathir had said on Friday that Barisan Nasional could be defeated if opposition parties put aside their egos, arrogance, personal feelings, and worked together.
The former prime minister recalled his cooperation with his rival, Anwar Ibrahim, to defeat BN in the 2018 general election. He said he had been willing to meet with Anwar then, and that “personal feelings, arrogance, egos and self-interest have no place in any struggle”.
Mahathir had entered the 2018 general election as chairman of Bersatu, which was a member of Pakatan Harapan with PKR, DAP and Amanah.
He later left Bersatu, founded Pejuang and formed Gerakan Tanah Air. a coalition of Malay-based parties, NGOs, academics and professionals.
The political parties in GTA are Pejuang, the national Indian Muslim alliance party (Iman), Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) and Berjasa.
